Each month, The Kentucky
Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from
our faithful readers. Among those letters we often find queries,
ranging from requests for words to songs and poems to trying
to locate former classmates and military buddies of long ago.
Here are a few queries from
April 2008
Enjoyed
Burke's General
Store Article
Dear Editor:
I really enjoy reading The Kentucky Explorer. It's like receiving
a touch of home each month.
I really enjoyed reading about Burke's General Store in Jenkins,
Letcher County, Kentucky. My family lived in Rocky Hollow and
bought things at Burke's and Kelly's Grocery.
I still have an aunt, Thelma McPherson, who lives in Rocky Hollow.
My cousin, Wilma Hampton, and her family live at Eolia, Kentucky.
Wilma's mother and my great-aunt, Sarah, lived to be 102 years
young. My brother, Don, lives near Hazard.
I dream of moving back to Kentucky one day.
My husband's aunt can't wait until she gets her magazine each
month.
Keep up the good work.

Audio
Recordings Of
Radio Programs Wanted
Dear Editor:
I am a college librarian and would like to hear from readers
who have audio recordings of radio programs that originated on
Kentucky radio stations in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. I am
especially interested in recordings of hometown country music,
church, and news programs.
I would also appreciate knowing about photographs of performers
who were heard on these progroms.

Have Two
Class Rings
Dear Editor:
I have in my possession a Caney Creek School class ring. It is
dated pre-1980. Also, I have a Knott County Central 1992 class
ring which has a name on it.
If anyone can identify these rings, they each will be returned
to the owner.

School
Photos Wanted
Dear Editor:
I am searching for a photo of the grade school at Redfox, Knott
County, Kentucky, during the late-1940s thru 1950s, before consolidation.
Zelda Hale, Ogie Back Adams and Vivian Sparkman were some of
the teachers.
Also, I would like a photo of the grade school at Yellow Creek,
Sassafras, Kentucky, that shows the playground with the basketball
goals, during the 1940s and 1950s, before consolidation. Hiram
Taylor was the principal during the mid-1940s.
