Each month, The Kentucky
Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from
our faithful readers. Whenever possible, we try to publish as
many of them as possible in the 12 pages we have set aside for
"Letters to the Editor."
Here are actual letters from June
2007

Nicholas Hocker Of
Madison County
Dear Editor:
The February 2007 issue of The Kentucky Explorer contained an
article about a springhouse possibly located on a creek called
Hockers Branch near Turnersville, Kentucky. I have some information
on a Nicholas Hocker in early Madison County, Kentucky. I believe
it's the same man, or his son, mentioned in the article.
Nicholas Hocker was born in Virginia 1787 and died in Madison
County, Kentucky, in 1854, at age of 67. This record was copied
from a book called Madison County Records Volume 2, Researchers
Publication.
Mr. Hocker was a county official in Madison County in 1816 when
he petitioned the court to have Nancy Willis (possibly born in
1870) appear at the next term of court to explain why her son
McKinzie (born 1795) shouldn't be bound out according to Commonwealth
law. Court records say "McKinzie's father has absconded
and left this country."
A copy of the notice dated October 16th indicates that Christopher
Durbin informed the court that the boy was living on his property
and wasn't destitute. Mr. Durbin was a brother-in-law having
married Nancy Willis's daughter, Rachel, in 1814.
Nicholas Hocker's household is listed on the 1840 Census of Madison
County: One male, 10-15; two females, 10-15; two males, 20-30;
one female, 30-40; one male 50-60. On the 1810 census the listing
for Nicholas Hocker is as follows: One male under 10; one male,
26-45; one female under 10; two females 16-26.

Park Dry Goods Store
Photo Wanted
Dear Editor:
The Park Dry Goods Store, formerly located at 12th and Blanklick
Street, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, was razed about 2004.
If a reader has a photo of the store I would be pleased to scan
and copy it, make copies for the contributor, and also pay for
the certified postage before or after I return the original photo
and copies.
My parents, Frederick and Catherine Seifert, owned Seifert's
Bakery and home at 1429 Russell Street in Covington from 1939-1973.
Mother would send my sister, Cathy, and me to Park's Dry Good
Store with money and a note for merchandise.

a copy of the song Where The Roses Never Fade.
The magazine has very interesting stories of past history.
My maternal grandmother grew up in Breathitt County. Her maiden

there.
