Each month, The Kentucky
Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from
our faithful readers. Among those letters we often find queries,
ranging from requests for words to songs and poems to trying
to locate former classmates and military buddies of long ago.
Here are a few queries from April
2007
Searching
For Books By
Nola Pease VanderMeer
Dear Editor:
I am searching for books by Nola Pease VanderMeer. I know she
wrote the book The Tired Country Smile. My uncle has a copy.
I would like to find a copy for my mom for she was named after
Nola. Also, my minister would like a copy. It is a wonderful
book. I was told that she may have written a second book, but
I have never been able to find out the title or when this second
book might have been published.

Interested
In Genealogy
Dear Editor:
I am so thankful for The Kentucky Explorer magazine. My parents
were from Breathitt County, Kentucky, and through the magazine
I can find out about my ancestors. I was like most children and
didn't ask my parents questions about them or their families
when I was growing up. What little I did hear from time to time
was that they both grew up in Breathitt County, and they got
married in Salyersville. Now, years after their deaths, I am
very interested in my background. I have been doing my family's
genealogy for almost five years.
I have learned so much from this magazine. I look forward to
every issue, and each one usually contains something about my
ancestors. Keep up the good work, for there are many people out
there who feel the way I do. I think I am kin to about every
family in Breathitt County, or it seems that way.

Photos Of
Liggett
Coal Camp Wanted
Dear Editor:
I am looking for photos of the Liggett Coal Camp in Harlan County,
Kentucky. I am especially interested in photos of the school,
the boardinghouse for the miners, or photos taken of different
houses in the coal camp. I lived there from 1952 to 1960. Our
house was located on the hill across from the boardinghouse.

Wants Words
And Music
Dear Editor:
I have been receiving The Kentucky Explorer for approximately
five years. I enjoy the magazine very much and have made many
friends and also found friends from my childhood.
I am looking for the words and music to several songs: There's
A Hand That's A Waiting and His Boundless Love by the Hee Haw
Gospel Quartet and Child Of The King by Vestal Goodman.
