Each month, The Kentucky
Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from
our faithful readers. Whenever possible, we try to publish as
many of them as possible in the 12 pages we have set aside for
"Letters to the Editor."
Here are actual letters from October
2006
Yancey Mine Disaster
Dear Editor:
I was riveted by the article submitted by Jerry Asher (June 2006
issue of The Kentucky Explorer) regarding the miners who died
in Harlan County and impressed by the completeness of the account.
The end of this writing is especially haunting. "Someone
once said that if we say their names and tell their story, they
will always be with us. To my knowledge not any kind of recognition
has been made to these men or their families for their sacrifice.
No plaques or monuments stand anywhere."
This is disturbing, and it seems to be true. After an Internet
search I found a Kentucky General Assembly Resolution from 1933
renaming a highway section the "1932 Yancey Mine Disaster
Memorial Highway."
Perhaps a local resident of Harlan County can verify if these
highway markers are still in place.

Robertson County Schoolhouse
Information Wanted
Dear Editor:
I would like to know if any readers have information on the old
schoolhouse or post office on the Alhambra Road (Oakwood Road)
in Robertson County.
My grandfather, R. W. Shepherd, owned the property on which the
schoolhouse was located. It was an elementary school and was
at one time a two-story building.
I was reared there, along with six younger siblings. My oldest
daughter lives there now.
Any information or photos would be appreciated.
My parents, Frank and Wilma Courtney, passed away in 2001 and
had lived in the old schoolhouse for at least 55 years.

Old Regular Baptist
Minute Books Wanted
Dear Editor:
I am searching for any old Old Regular Baptist minute books.
If anyone has any minute books of any Old Regular Baptist Association,
and they would like to part with them, I would be glad to get
them.
I am also looking for any photos (recent and/or older) that anyone
would be willing to give of any elders, ministers, and members
of the Old Regular Baptists.
I would be willing to pay for or reimburse any postage and handling.
