Each month, The Kentucky
Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from
our faithful readers. Whenever possible, we try to publish as
many of them as possible in the 12 pages we have set aside for
"Letters to the Editor."
Here are actual letters from our June
2004 issue:

Researching Ancestors
From Eastern Kentucky
Dear Editor:
I have recently started reading The Explorer, and I enjoy it!
I have started digging deeper into my genealogy, and I was wondering
if any reader could help me.
Most of my family, for many generations, were from Eastern Kentucky;
primarily Knott, Pike, Floyd, and Letcher counties. Some town
names I have come across are Drift, Kona, Kite, Topmost, Virgie,
Myra, etc. Many of my ancestors are buried in small graveyards
all over these counties, and I am having a hard time finding
the location of these cemeteries.
I am trying to start a collection of photos of towns and tombstones
in my genealogy folder, along with histories of the towns and
other information. Some of the surnames I am researching are:
Bates, Caudill, Cook, Hall, Vance, Tackett, Martin, Greer, and
Vanover. I'm especially having a hard time with the Vanover line.
My great-grandmother was Gertrude Vanover, who was born September
5, 1887.
If anyone has any information or photos they would like to share,
or if anyone is researching these surnames from the same areas,
I would like to hear from you.

Searching For Friend
Dear Editor:
I moved from Weeksbury in 1968. I had a good friend there named
Carol Ann Hall. We went to school together from the first to
the fifth grade. I would like to hear from her, but I have no
way of getting in touch with her.
If anyone knows of Carol Ann Hall or where I could reach her,
please let me know.
