McRoberts High School (Letcher County) Girls' Basketball
Team, 1923-24. Third from the left is Edith Eva Kelly. She was
the daughter of Reuben Wright Kelly and Naomi Isabelle Gardner
Kelly. They lived at Whitaker in Letcher County, Kentucky, while
Reuben worked for Southeast Coal Company. Edith walked to McRoberts
to attend high school. She married Jesse Wilson Long, a butcher
for the Consolidated Coal Company at McRoberts. They later owned
a grocery store in Neon before moving to Mt. Sterling, Montgomery
County, Kentucky, where they also owned a grocery store and a
small farm. Jesse died in 1948 and Edith in 1984. They are both
