An Obituary
From World War II

Dear Editor:
Recently, while going through some old boxes, I found a letter dated March 1945 addressed to my uncle, Cecil Davenport. Uncle Cecil was serving in the Army in the Pacific during World War II. Enclosed in the letter was a newsletter from Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. In this newsletter is a picture and obituary of Pfc. Elza Earl Bruce, who had been killed in action while fighting in Europe.
I do not know why my uncle would have been interested in this soldier. I suppose they may have trained together. If any friends or family members are interested in this, I would be glad to hear from you.

Information Wanted On Brandt Family

Dear Editor:
Ever since my son picked up a free copy of your wonderful magazine at the Kentucky State Fair several years ago and brought it home to me, I have been a faithful reader, renewing my subscription over and over. Thank you (and thank whomever initiated the idea of the magazine) from the bottom of my heart.
Thank you also for printing the stories I wrote about my father and mother, Clarence and Clara Theiler, in the May and June 2002 issues in I Remember.
Since your readership is so far expanded into all the counties of Kentucky, it seems so strange that there has never been a mention of anyone named Brandt. This would be the name of my mother before she married my father. I read every issue with intent and disappointment that I never run across this name, which I have desperately searched for. My mother, Clara Brandt Theiler, was the only child of Charles Henry Brandt and his wife, Catherine McDaniel Brandt. Charles Henry was one of numerous children born to Christopher Brandt of Germany, and Sara Mills, of Union County; where Charles Henry was born and died.
Clara Brandt Theiler was born in 1902. Her father, Charles Henry Brandt died in 1904. All my years of research have never given me the place where Charles Henry is buried; although, all the evidence I have is that he is buried in Union County.
If anyone has any information on any of the Brandt family from Union County; or from the Henderson, Kentucky, or Evansville, Indiana areas, where I believe Catherine McDaniel was from, I would appreciate hearing from you.
I have a whole briefcase full of superfluous information, which I have gathered in my years of research, but nothing specific on the burial place of Charles Henry Brandt, my maternal grandfather.
