Each month, The Kentucky Explorer magazine receives literally scores of letters from our faithful readers. Among those letters we often find queries, ranging from requests for words to songs and poems to trying to locate former classmates and military buddies of long ago.
Researching 5th Kentucky Infantry Dear Editor: I am researching the Fifth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment, U. S. (the Louisville Legion) in order to write a comprehensive history for publication. I'm looking for access to letters, diaries, and photos of the men who served in this outstanding Union regiment. Please contact me, if you have any information that would help in this project. Joseph R. Reinhart Where Is James A. Hodges? Dear Editor: My father, Charles E. Oppelt, served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. He was assigned to Company 338 for boot camp at the recruit training center at Great Lakes, Illinois, under company commanders R. J. Werdin, QMC; and O. L. Louvar, QMC. Many of the young men he trained with were from Ohio and Kentucky. I am looking for a Navy buddy of my dad's, James A. Hodges from Tallahassee, Florida, who served with him in Squadron Air Group 1 in 1950. Any help would be appreciated. Sandy Evans |
